Beginning to think about car shopping. Mazda 3 vs Honda Civic Si

My daughter will be getting a driver's license soon, and my plan is to bequeath my Mazda 3 to her and get a new car for me.

I've loved the 3 and how fun it is to drive. But the more I look at the new 3's, the less impressed I get.

Some basic research has told me the Civic Si might be the new king of small, fun-to-drive cars.

Any other suggestions I should be looking at?

Basic requirements:

Not too expensive. Probably a ceiling of $28K or so.

I don't buy used. I buy new and drive them into the ground. Every used car shopping experience I've had has been a total ripoff. But new car purchases have worked out very well.

Something small-to-midsize. Don't want subcompact, nor anything large.

Manual transmission is a must (this one narrows the field A LOT).

Not a Miata. I find them extraordinarily uncomfortable.
